Organization Profile – Wadesboro Garden Club and Ola Kala Garden Club

Perhaps you don’t realize the time that members of two garden clubs spend in beautifying our Uptown business district. Join us in thanking the Wadesboro Garden Club and Ola Kala Club for all their hard work in our Uptown business district.

The Wadesboro Garden Club, organized in 1939, has planted and maintains a number of the flower pots placed around Uptown. Some flower pots are maintained by merchants but some are maintained solely by volunteers of the Wadesboro Garden Club. You may also have noticed the garden at the back of the Medical Museum at the corner of Wade and Washington Streets. This small garden is planted and maintained by the Wadesboro Garden Club.

The Ola Kala Garden Club was organized in 1950 and if you’ve ever wondered about the name “ola kala”, it comes from the name of a deep yellow ruffled iris hybridized in 1943. And that name came from the legend of Greek "Shine Boys" rubbing shoes until they shone like burnished gold, and their words were "Ola Kala" meaning O.K. The Ola Kala Garden Club maintains the Thomas Wade memorial garden at the Anson County Courthouse corner. The flower beds are filled throughout the growing season with flowering annuals and perennials. An irrigation system was recently installed.

Renovations on Rutherford Street

There’s been a lot of activity on Rutherford Street in the last few months. The most recent renovation is two doors north of Thrift Loan on Rutherford. UWI’s Facade Grant Program offers incentive grants to Uptown business property owners to help with the cost of improving the facade of their properties. The most recently awarded facade grant is for facade renovations at 110 N. Rutherford Street where Contour Services is now located.
